For years, Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) and dodgeball went hand-in-hand. Every year they hosted a Dodgeball tournament to raise money and awareness for their club, but all of that ended in 2017 when it was discontinued.
However this year, DECA adviser Lisa-Marie Shrag and the club, brought DECA Dodgeball back into the spotlight.
“DECA dodgeball is an opportunity for our students to come together in a fun competitive night playing dodgeball,” said Shrag.
The game consists of two teams of six to ten people fighting it out dodgeball style on the court. The dodgeballs are spread out on the middle of the court. When the whistle blows both teams run to the middle and try to get the dodgeballs for their team to throw. The first team to get all the other teams’ players out wins that match.
While in past years DECA has had some teachers participate either as referees, some teachers who are alumni remember playing the game as students.
While now LA teacher Dylan Schroeder remembers playing the game, Mike Stoffel was his referee.
“DECA dodgeball was a really popular when I was in high school,” said Schroeder. “I think I played all four years – from 2010-2014.”
Schroeder thinks that even if you don’t think you’re good at dodgeball it might be something fun to try out.
“It was a unique tournament for sure,” he said. “It was super competitive; people used to dress up in themes or sometimes costumes.”
Schroeder remembers when 12 – 15 teams would take to the court.
“This was such an awesome event,” said Shrag, “that many kids looked forward to being a part of every year.”
