SFHS senior sets future plans in motion
Senior Bailey DeMar has her future plans set. On Sunday September 21st, she verbally committed to NDSU to join their D1 track and field athletes.
“I’m going to compete in triplejump, long jump, and try highjump,” said DeMar.
She has the most passion for triple jump and absolutely loves it, so training over the summer at an NDSU camp with triple jump olympian and NDSU alumni, Amanda Smock, was an exciting experience for DeMar.
“I really liked NDSU after going to the camp in the summer,” DeMar said, “I also had a good connection with the coach there which made me pick NDSU over other colleges.”
Her coach at NDSU is Trevor Barry who competed in the 2012 Olympics for high jump. Besides getting the opportunity to train and be coached by olympians, she puts a lot of her own time and effort to improve.
“I do some pyleo, single leg workouts, and I’ve been really working on my overall strength,” said DeMar.
DeMar’s current goal is to go and compete at the Simplot Games.
“The Simplot Games is a big meet for highschoolers,” said DeMar, “Where there will be lots of competition and I’ll get a feel for how college will be.”
Her previous record for triple jump earned her 4th place last year in the state tournament. This summer, DeMar asked olympian Amanda Smock what her record when she was her age. Smock’s answer was eye-opening.
“My record for triple jump is 38 feet and 81/2 inches and Amanda’s was the same when she came out of high school,” said DeMar. “Smock’s current record is 46 feet and 61/4 inches.”
Her high school coach Andy Fobort explains that DeMar doesn’t just set goals for herself, but follows through and accomplishes them.
“She is one that’s determined, leads by example, and she doesn’t just talk the talk,” Forbort said, “She walks the walk.”
